Skype for iPhone offers solid VoIP calls
Skype for iPhone has features similar to those of other mobile versions of the service. Lets see if your Skype contacts are online and available, make free Skype to Skype, use SkypeOut to call landline and mobile IM with Skype contacts and receiving calls through SkypeIn numbers. You can not make video calls and conference calls as with the desktop version, but yes, reportedly accept an incoming conference call (although we could not test this feature).
Skype for iPhone requires Wi-Fi for voice calls. The Skype to Skype calls sounded loud and clear, with better quality than in a typical cellular call. The SkypeOut calls to landline and mobile were not so defined, yet they were very good, comparable to a decent phone. At some point I heard an echo of and annoying, but lasted less than a minute. SkypeOut rates, which start at 2.1 cents per minute, are the same as for the iPhone.
But Skype for iPhone is not totally free of defects. Showed that one of my contacts were offline, even though it was connected. (This condition only changed when my contact called me). And sometimes the application was slow to respond to my touch on the touch screen.
You will not find many unique features for the iPhone. You can use the iPhone’s camera to take a picture for your profile, or upload one from your photo collection, but that’s all. However, if you need a solid mobile VoIP service for iPhone, I highly recommend Skype. Of course, some rivals have features not seen in Skype-like ability to chat via IM services from third parties such as Yahoo Messenger and AIM. But Skype is imposed easily in call quality.
